Tips for Surviving a Long Bus Journey

When you are travelling big distances and you are on a tight budget, it is highly likely that you are going to have to take at least one or two long bus journeys. And if you have ever taken one before, you will know that it is not the most pleasant experience in the world – and that is certainly an understatement! The key to surviving it is by making sure that you have properly prepared yourself. So, here are a few tips on how you can make it through to your destination as comfortably as possible.

Choose Your Seat Wisely

Don’t assume that all seats are the same on a bus. If there is a toilet on board, you probably don’t want to be right next to it if you can help it! Also, bus journeys tend to be at their bumpiest at the back, so you should try to avoid here – especially if you know that the roads aren’t in the best condition. Whether you prefer an aisle or a window seat is up to you, but both have their individual pros and cons.

Make Sleeping Easier

Obviously, sleeping on a bus is not easy, but even an hour or two of shuteye will help to pass the journey that little bit quicker. So, make sure to pack a blanket and a neck pillow along with you. Also, make sure that you have easy access to some additional layers in case they really start blasting out the air conditioning! Other items which are worth packing include earplugs and an eye mask, so you can block out your environment as much as possible.

Bring Snacks and Drinks

While your bus will need to stop to refuel from time to time, it is usually the case that the shops are very expensive. So, it is a good idea to stock up on all the food and drinks that you need before you set out. As well as the sugary treats, try to pack something a little more healthy as well.

Prepare Your Entertainment

Thanks to modern technology, there are more entertainment options than ever before. So, you can load up your tablet or phone with a host of movies, music, podcasts, and games. One minute you can be listening to your favourite tunes, and the next you can control an empire in Final Fantasy XV. Other options include reading a book (if it doesn’t make you feel too travel sick), writing in a journal or simply chatting with your fellow passengers.

Take the Time to Stretch Your Legs

Even if you don’t need to use the bathroom, you should take the opportunity to stretch your legs when the bus stops. Sitting in those cramped seats can get mighty uncomfortable after a while, and there is even the risk of certain health issues such as DVT striking you as well.

Follow these tips, and you should pass your next long bus journey a lot more smoothly.
